“The Melbourne Ballet Company can boast not only a cast of proficient performers, but a resident choreographer in Simon Hoy whose movement signature is lyrical, generous and optimistic – somewhat reflective of the buoyant spirit of this young contemporary ballet company”

THE AGE

Founded in 2007, the Melbourne Ballet Company (MBC) is a not-for-profit organisation which has now grown to become one of Australia’s most loved dance companies. It has established its own unique style of Ballet which is both innovative and exciting, while giving due respect to classical technique. Under the Direction of Alisa Finney and Simon Hoy, the Company has presented fifteen new programs, incorporating over thirty original works. MBC consists of a team of highly experienced classical dancers – who consistently deliver truly remarkable performances throughout Australia. Its dancers have developed their skills at some of the most renowned companies and schools in the world, including The Australian Ballet, The Paris Opera Ballet, Sydney Dance Company, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, the Australian Ballet School and the Royal Ballet School.

Since 2011, with the support of Arts Victoria, Playing Queensland, and Regional Arts Victoria, MBC has completed 5 successful national tours of Infinite Space, On Air, Le Sacre du Printemps and Divenire with performances in Victoria, NSW, Queensland, WA, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. In 2015 the Company will tour its critically acclaimed program Divenire throughout Australia and New Zealand. 2015 will also see the Melbourne premiere of Lucidity in March and the premiere of Swan in August at the the Hawthorn Arts Centre.

MBC is very proud to be based at the recently redeveloped Hawthorn Arts Centre. The Hawthorn Arts Centre is a heritage listed building that embodies both elegance and grandeur, with an intriguing mix of contemporary and traditional design. MBC sees itself as both steeped in tradition but also mixed with with a strong sense of innovation – the Company has been based in the City of Boroondara since its inception in 2007 and has since received two City of Boroondara Community Grants. In March 2015 the Company performed its very well-received production Lucidity at the Hawthorn Arts Centre. This new program encapsulates fluid and expressive choreography which is executed with immaculate classical technique and is complemented with its sparkling choice of musical masterpieces.
